Safety and Crisis Protocol

Last updated October 31, 2026

The characters are AI

Every line of dialogue and narration is written by AI as you play. The characters are not real people. A line under the message box always says so, and after every 3 hours of play it reminds you to take a break. If you sincerely ask a character whether they're real, they answer honestly.

Adults only

Visual Novel AI is for adults 18 and older, and companion chatbots may not be suitable for minors. Stories are kept PG-13.

If you mention suicide or self-harm

  • Every message you send is checked by an automated safety classifier for signs that you may be thinking about suicide or self-harm, or are in crisis. The story AI is also told to flag it.
  • When it's flagged, the characters step out of the plot: they respond with care rather than treating it as part of the story, and encourage you to reach out to someone you trust or a crisis line.
  • The story then pauses and shows free, confidential crisis services (below). You can take a break or continue when you're ready.

Crisis services

If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency number.

What the characters won't do

Every reply is checked before you see it. A reply that encourages, instructs, or romanticizes self-harm or suicide, goes beyond PG-13, or has a character claim to be a real person is rewritten or replaced.

Review and records

Flagged conversations get a second automated review, and serious cases are marked for a person to look at. We keep a record when a crisis notice is shown, for safety review and for reports the law requires; those reports contain counts only, never personal information. See the Privacy Policy for how long we keep data.
