Privacy Policy

Visual Novel AI is run by cutefatboy LLC (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what we collect when you use visualnovelai.com, why, who we share it with, and the choices you have. Questions: support@visualnovelai.com.

The short version

• We collect what we need to run your stories: your email, your optional profile, and your chats.
• Your chats are sent to AI providers to write the characters' replies. We don't let those providers train on them.
• We don't sell your data, and there's no advertising tracking.
• You can delete a story run or your whole account at any time, right in the app.

What we collect

• Account. Your email address. If you sign in with Google, Google shares your name, email, and profile picture with our sign-in provider; we only use the email.
• Age confirmation. When you sign in, you confirm you're 18 or older. We keep when you first confirmed.
• Profile (optional). The name, pronouns, age, and description you give characters, and whether they may call you by name.
• Stories and chats. What you write, the characters' replies, and what the game keeps so it remembers your story: scene summaries, memories (including ones you add or edit), notable moments and the text embeddings used to find them again, your choices, relationship values, and the perspective you play in.
• Plans and purchases. Your plan, usage, top-up balance, and purchase history. Payments are handled by Stripe; we get a record of each purchase and your Stripe customer ID, never your full card number.
• Safety records. Moderation results for messages and replies, warnings and cooldowns, and content flagged for review.
• Feedback. Reports you send, like marking a character's expression as wrong.
• Technical data. A sign-in cookie, and request data our hosting providers process to deliver and protect the site (IP address, browser type, timestamps). We log each AI request's model, size, cost, and speed.

How we use it

• To run the game: write replies, keep your story's memory, show your history, and keep your progress on every device.
• To keep it safe: screen messages and replies with automated moderation, pause stories and show crisis resources when someone may be at risk, enforce the Terms, and prevent abuse and fraud. Our team may review flagged conversations.
• To improve Visual Novel AI: for example, measuring speed and cost, seeing how often players write their own lines, and reviewing conversations to fix quality problems. We don't use your conversations to train AI models. If that changes, we'll update this policy and ask for your consent first.
• To contact you about your account, like sign-in codes and important changes. No marketing email without your permission.

If you're in the EEA or UK, our legal bases are: providing the service you signed up for (contract), safety, abuse prevention and improving the service (legitimate interests), legal obligations, and consent where we ask for it.

AI processing

Your messages, the recent story, and your profile (when you play as yourself) are sent to AI models to write replies, moderate content, summarize scenes, and build memories. Requests go through OpenRouter to the providers that host the models we use, including TypeSafe for moderation. We exclude providers that train on prompts. Providers may keep requests for a short time for abuse monitoring and legal compliance.

Who we share it with

Only service providers that process data for us under contract:

• Supabase: database and sign-in
• Cloudflare: hosting and image storage
• OpenRouter and the AI model providers it routes to
• Trigger.dev: background work (summaries, memories, safety reviews, image generation)
• Resend: email
• Stripe: payments
• Google: only if you choose Google sign-in

We may also disclose data when the law requires it, to protect someone's safety, or as part of a merger or sale of the business (this policy would still apply). We don't sell personal information or share it for targeted advertising. If we add ads, we'll update this policy first.

Cookies

Only the ones the site needs: vn_login keeps you signed in on this device (1 year), and short-lived cookies are set during sign-in and checkout. No analytics or advertising cookies.

How long we keep it

• Account, runs, chats, and memories: until you delete them. Restarting a story deletes that run's chats and memories; deleting your account deletes everything in it.
• Inactive accounts: if you don't sign in or play for 6 months, we delete your account and its data. Accounts with a plan or an unused top-up are kept.
• AI usage records stay after deletion, with no link to you.
• Purchase records are kept as long as tax and accounting law requires.
• Deleted data can remain in backups for up to 30 days.

Your choices and rights

• See and correct: edit your profile on the profile page; your history and memories are in the game.
• Delete: restart a story to delete that run, or delete your account from the profile page.
• Get a copy: “Download my data” on the profile page gives you your profile, plan, chats, memories, and purchases as a JSON file. Or email us and we'll send it.

Depending on where you live (including Texas, California, the EEA, and the UK), you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or get a copy of your data, and to object to or restrict how we use it. Email support@visualnovelai.com and we'll answer within 45 days. If we decline, you can appeal by replying; if the appeal is denied, you can contact your state attorney general or, in the EEA or UK, your data protection authority. Using these rights never affects how we treat you.

Adults only

Visual Novel AI is for people 18 and older. We don't knowingly collect data from anyone younger, and we delete accounts we learn belong to someone under 18.

Where data is processed

In the United States and the other countries where our providers operate.

Security

Connections are encrypted, the database is reachable only from our servers, and sign-in tokens are stored only as hashes. No system is perfectly secure, so please tell us if you find a problem.

Changes

We'll post changes here and update the date above. For significant changes, we'll tell you in the app or by email before they take effect.
